First ACTIVE Summer School on Advanced Technologies for a Knowledge-Powered Enterprise
You are cordially invited to attend the 1st ACTIVE Summer School that will take place from September 4 - 6 in Park Hotel, Bled, Slovenia. The summer school will be followed by the “European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases -ECML PKDD 2009“.
This 3-day summer school is mainly targeted at students, scholars and researchers from industries being interested in recent developments, solutions and technologies from the areas of:
> Semantic technologies and content,
> Social software and Web 2.0,
> Adaptive and context-aware systems,
> Context mining,
> Knowledge filters,
> Stream mining,
> Process mining,
> Anomaly detection,
> Meta learning,
> Forecasting,
> Social network analysis.
ACTIVE is an FP7 three year Integrated research Project co-funded by the European Commission that started on 1st March 2008. ACTIVE addresses the need for greater knowledge worker productivity with three integrated research themes: easier sharing of information through a combination of formal techniques based on ontologies and informal techniques based on user tags so-called folksonomies; sharing and reusing informal knowledge processes-by learning those knowledge processes from the user’s behaviour; and understanding the user’s context-so as to tailor the information presented to the user to fit the current task. The results of ACTIVE are relevant to all knowledge work; they are being validated in the domains of consultancy, telecommunications and engineering.
ACTIVE integrates into highly innovative application systems, concepts, methods and tools from the fields of Social Software and Web 2.0, Semantic Technologies, Context Mining, Context Modelling, and Context Sensitive Task Management and Knowledge Process Mining, Knowledge Process Modelling and Pro-Active Knowledge Process Support.

IRML - Interactive Robots and Media Laboratory

International Summer School 2009
The Interactive Robots and Media Lab of the UAEU, home of the Microsoft-chosen "FaceBots" social robotics project, as well as "IbnSina", the world's first arabic speaking humanoid, is organizing its second international summer school, which wil take place in 2009 between July 5 and July 31 (four weeks). The summer-school will be mini-project based, with multiple teams of 2-3 students, and selected lectures will also take place.

There will be free accomodation as well as a stipend for a limited number of applicants with excellent qualifications. Applicants can be at postdoc, graduate, and also undergraduate level. Excursions to local attractions (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujeirah etc) will take place in the weekends, as well as tours of the region's numerous spectacular sights.

Project Facebots on BBC and media of 30 countries
The first time UAEU hits world news for a research project: Project "Facebots", one of the two main research projects of IRML (alongside with the first arabic speaking himanoid robot "IbnSina"), has achieved vast worldwide publicity. FaceBots, the world's first robot that uses FaceBook in order to create longer-lasting human-robot relationships, was recently featured on BBC and leading media of more than 30 countries worldwide (including "wired" magazine, Corriera del la sera and much more). FaceBots: Robots utilizing and publishing social information in FaceBook, Nikolaos Mavridis and Tamer Rabie, United Arab Emirates University. The system to be developed by Mavridis and Rabie is expected to achieve two significant novelties: arguably being the first robot that is truly embedded in a social web, and being the first robot that can purposefully exploit and create social information available online. Furthermore, it is expected to provide empirical support for their main hypothesis — that the formation of shared episodic memories within a social web can lead to more meaningful long-term human-robot relationships.
